Questions and Links. No Cat Pictures.

This is a test of the Vanessa blogging system. This is only a test. If this were a real blog post, it would contain interesting words and witty banter. Maybe some cat pictures. Instead, it merely contains links. And a few questions. Please stay tuned for your regularly scheduled blogging. Tomorrow when I’ve had more sleep. Or at least more caffeine.

Ahem.

First, the questions:

  1. I know a lot of guys who have iPhones, but I don’t know of any girls who have one. I know I haven’t been so nice about the iPhone before, but if you admit to having one, I promise I won’t mock. Much.
  2. What Facebook apps do you find to be the most valuable? I’m thinking Facebook could be much more useful if only I had something installed other than a way for people to send me virtual cocktails. Not that I don’t love the cocktails and I hope everyone who has sent me one knows I’m cashing them in for the real thing the next time we’re in a bar together. But still.
  3. What should I set my DVR to record? Right now, it only records Scrubs reruns, but I’m assuming there must be something new that I’m missing out on.

Now, the links. I’ve done lots of writing at Search Engine Land over the last few days:

Bonus blogging: In a sign that there remains a least a small amount of good in the world, I arrived at the parking garage this morning one minute after 9am. This may not seem of consequence; however, if you arrive before 9am, you pay $12 for one day and if you arrive after 9am, you pay $24. Sadly, my ticket was stamped 9:01. I lamented to the parking attendant that I sadly arrived just a moment too late and he grabbed my ticket and scribbled on it, critically turning back time. I may not have that mythical and longed-for time machine, but at least I have a nice parking guy.

    1. I know several men with iPhones as well, but not a single female. Interesting.

    3. Smallville . . . for sure! Try it for a few weeks. Don’t worry about catching up on past seasons. More or less seasons 1 - 4 were about a freak of the week that Clark sent to the insane asylum. Season 5 was about ‘bad guys’ from the phantom zone that Clark took care of (with some help from the Justice League and the Martian Manhunter).

It shared the same network as Buffy for a while, that has to mean something, right? ;-) Set it right now before somebody Twitters, IMs, emails, blog posts, or calls you and, in doing so, whisks you away from the all important task of recording Smallville.

Parking: LOL, what a great way to force people to be on time for work. A $12 penalty for being late!

    1) Ahh, I suppose I shall be the first female (commenter) who admits to having an iPhone? I love it! I always wanted an iPod but never got one and when the iPhone came out, and I needed a new phone, I checked it out, loved it, went with it. I, sadly, have already cracked the screen. Which is really annoying but it’s not that bad. I used to have the Cingular 8-something or other. That was ok… but the iPhone is much better!

    2) I don’t do Facebook. :) An iPhone but no Facebook. I know.

    3) I vote for Grey’s Anatomy but if you haven’t been watching it so far, I don’t see you subscribing. Try Big Shots. It’s new and funny AND has Michael Vartan. Or The Office. The Office is hysterical.

Parking - That is disgusting! Twice the fee! Wow!

i like californication if you have showtime

    2. In addition to the previously mentioned Happy Hour app, the only apps I have installed are iLike, Movies and Favorite Quotes. The reason that I installed all three of these apps is because they allowed me to delete the long lists I had in the information section of my profile (plus, the pictures of artists and movies added a little bit of color to my profile).

    3. Nip/Tuck (new season starts 10/30), The Office, and Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations

So, there are still parking lot attendants?

Even a parking lot attendant can appreciate why Monday mornings can be tough, on the other hand, appealing to a computerized parking meter would be funny though!

Have an iPhone, love it madly. :)

1: I only know 1 girl with an iPhone, and it was given to her by a guy.

2: Just barely set up a facebook account.. no apps, sorry…

3: The office! I am also starting to like Chuck. Don’t judge me.

I don’t have an iPhone and I’m still trying to figure out Facebook so I’ll just skip to question three and say that you should absolutely be watching “Chuck” and “Life”. Chuck, if you liked 40 year old virgin but thought it needed more spies (and Adam Baldwin) and Life because Damien Lewis is excellent.

  10. Google Seattle Celebrates a Birthday and Opens A New Ofice…

Steve Yegge, an engineer at the Google Kirkland office, recently posted to the Google blog about the Kirkland office’s third birthday. He also announced the opening of an engineering office in Fremont. Both locations are in the Seattle area — Fremont…

    1) No iphones in the uk yet….but I will definitely bitch slap whoever comes to me and says their iphone is better than my N95!
    2) Don’t know enough people who are on facebook (or myspace even). I’m still waiting on the mobile social network to come to fruition.
    3) One word: Heroes.

I’m a girl, and I have an iPhone… I have two female friends and a female co-worker who have iPhones, too. Fun times!

I don’t find any Facebook apps helpful. Fun, yes, but helpful? Probably not. Although I do like the WishList app that the company I work for made; it would only be more valuable if someone bought me something off of it. :)

I highly recommend having your DVR record “The Soup” on the E! network every Friday night. It’s like Cliff’s Notes for bad network television, only funnier.

    Hey Vanessa,
    On the Facebook app thing…
There was a very important point brought up at the widget summit about Facebooks apps and their usefulness. Almost all “useful” apps don’t do well on facebook, or more precisely, business apps and apps that have actual value, universally are not held close to the heart of facebookers. This is so true to Facebook that they actually pretty much said. “Are you thinking of creating a useful Facebook app? Don’t do it, it will fail.”
Their reasoning is that people do not log onto facebook to do work, they log on to facebook to escape it.
My brain always like to argue with whatever people who know n=better than me say, so I was like, well I am sure there will be a place for useful apps in the future…
But the overwhelming trend (I went app to app to app in the directory to research this) is basically stupid silly apps are the ones that do well in Facebook, and useful ones (where you are like biting someone or throwing a sheep) do crappy as crappy can be.
I am working on improving the sphinn facebook app and creating one for SEL as well. What are your thoughts on that, are there any interactive things you see as useful. I think (for the sphinn one) one nice feature would be similar to “poke” except it wold be like a “hint” (in other words…. hey look at my blog and submit my story to sphinn cause I don’t want to look like an ass for submitting it myself) you got any ideas on this or other things you would like to see?

  14. Pam on 25 October, 2007

I completely concur with Life and Chuck as suggested by Susan. They are my favorite new shows. And I love Scrubs too if that gives any credit to my TV taste and gets you to tivo these shows.

    P.S. So’s your face

  15. Vanessa on 25 October, 2007

    Hey Pat,

I’ll think about the Sphinn app and what might be cool to add to it…

Now, if we get more great parking lot attendants, we shall be able to time travel.

    3:

Scrubs–>Arrested Development //3 seasons on DVD. Super Excellent

Arrested Development–>It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia //Season 3 currently playing on FX

(Scrubs && Arrested Development)–>30 Rock //Season 3 currently playing on NBC. Not nearly as funny as Seasons 1 and 2

Extras //Seasons 1&2 on Dvd. Excellent.

    3:

    Can’t believe I forgot:

Flight of the Conchords. //Season 1 just aired on HBO. There is an HBO special on DVD that is also very very funny.
