Sometimes you want to go where everybody doesn’t bury you the second they see your name

This is a very short post just to say how happy it makes me to find a site that doesn’t bury the hell out of my stories the second someone submits them.

OK, and maybe that’s only because you can’t technically bury a submission on Sphinn, but it still, it warms my heart that Sphinners have sphunn my cats up into a hot topic.

And so I can proudly put the Sphinn badge on the post. Which I could really never do with the Digg badge, because seriously, how lame does it look to show that your post has 1 digg. Now, if the badge also turned into a giant bury icon, well, I might go for the badge then.

PS. Only sphinn up the cats if you really want to. Which you do. Because you can’t say they aren’t the best cats you’ve ever known, right? (Known of course in the sense that you’ve read a person you may have never met before write about them and perhaps you’ve seen pictures).

Updated post to actually provide some pictures:

lolcharlie

lolrandy

PPS. Who are these “Matt’s cats” that you speak of? What do you mean they’re better?

It’s funny how the lolcats are sweeping through SEOLand. I got hooked on this month though comments and posts on my social blogging site but at the same time they’ve hit the SEO world.

    Yes, cute cats! :)
But… sphinn… melodrama! What happens if you do get voted down? Does it hurt more than it digg? It does! In absolute horror I’ve just noticed that a (I thought - helpful) comment discussing URLs and what’s needed to get into Google News as been voted as unhelpful!

*weep* I demand answers! *sob* Revenge! Rewengy!

Cats are so much cooler than dogs and I’ve never seen Matt’s Cats drive carz. I have a non-pet question. I’ve been using Site Map Pro for the site map on some of my sites, but it does not provide a way to break up the site map into multiple pages. One site is just over 1600 pages and the program is listing all 1600 pages on one site map page. Is this the best way or should I find a new program that will break the map down into pages with no more than 100 links per page?

Okay, I am getting ready to move and I also have a very fat and very furry cat. How traumatic did yours find the balding process? I am going to take both of them to the vet to get their shots updated and take then to the groomers, so I am seriously considering getting her shaved because, well, she’s fat and she has *ahem* issues. Also, any advice you have from cross-country moving with cats. Because I am at my wits end. *flaps hands*

Alsox2: Because of the new job, I probably won’t be at SES in August. :( So close, yet so far away!

Andrew, that comment seemed helpful to me too!

Kahmer, I’m not familiar with Site Map Pro. Are you using it to create an HTML sitemap for your site or to create an XML Sitemap to submit to seach engines?

Amber! New job! Congrats! Where are you moving? Randy doesn’t like being shaved — he gets all pissed off and moody, but he gets over it pretty quick. And he likes being cooler and non-matted. I have taken many long road trips with my cats. My cats do pretty well, as long as the car has air conditioning. I’ll send you an email as not to bore everyone with my cats’ quirks in the car. Heh.

    Vanessa,
I use Site Map Pro to create an xml file and a html file, but its the html file that I’m worried about. I’m willing to search out a new sitemap tool if you suggest breaking up my html sitemap into smaller pages. Did you start work at Zillow? Are they cat friendly?

Hee. Thank you! I really appreciate it. They seem to be the most complicated part of this crazy move.

I am moving to DC, actually. To do internet marketing for the Peace Corps, if you can believe it! Well, my background check and security clearance are not done yet, so it’s not completely official but I haven’t committed any crimes that I know of, so I think I am okay.

But I have to be there, like, the first week of August. So I have about three weeks to do what usually takes months. So, you know, little bit stressed.

Yeah, so. Email me. These people probably don’t want to hear about my life story any more than the cat shaving antics. Heh.

Rich, for an HTML site map, you definitely don’t want 1600 links on one page. However, it may be difficult for you to find an out-of-the box app to create this site map for you. You want your HTML site map to be easy for visitors to navigate. If you use a content management system, you may be able to hook something into that that creates a main HTML site map with category links, each drilling into a subpage, organized by topic.

Without seeing the content, it’s hard to say exactly the best way to organize the HTML site map, but in general, you don’t want it to overwhelm the visitor. You want it to be a nice map of the site that visitors can use to find their way around.

Thanks for reminding me. I need to look more into Zillow’s cat policy. :)

It moves me to see the impact of these image macros called “lolcats” on the interweb and its users, but at the same time I feel kind of sad : (

It must be nice to live near the see. But I believe you moved from there? How are you going to replace sea, if at all?

  10. Yuri on 18 July, 2007

Err, I guess I meant ocean. Unless you are staying/moving to another coast, of course.

Since my old buddy died years ago I just love all cats.

Because of our baby boom, respectively an unproven theory saying that cats who hunt in the great outdoors and carry their swag home to bunker it under sofas and cradles are not monster-compatible, I’m no longer allowed to have cats :(
I don’t think Matt’s cats or Lisa’s are ‘better’, I mean where is the video of the great international search-geek-cats competition? Too sad my cats-category project didn’t get the attention it deserved, I should have added a link to your flickr gallery ;)

  12. [...] Vanessa Fox loves her cats. A lot. And that lolcat site. A lot. (I know, I know this should have been mentioned two weeks ago, [...]

I saw that! Sadly, I think all my buried stories are too old for the tool. If a story of mine ever gets submitted again, I’m sure it’ll get instantly buried and then maybe I can check it.

There are many, many differences between Digg and sphinn. Digg caters to anyone other than the seo industry. Sphinn targets and caters to only the seo industry. That’s a good reason why. :-)
If I were digg, I’d not cater to seo’s either… all social media site for that matter as seo’s really have only one agenda and those sites know what it is. I’m not referring to you Vanessa as I do believe your agenda is pure, but those directly offering seo services is not pure and digg knows this. Sphinn loves you and rightly so.

Besides; anyone with cats and who loves cats is a good friend of mine as I’ve always had them as well.
